It's a tough job to keep up with the logistics while finishing a diploma project, I've realized. Today I found this postcard, supposed to be sent months ago. It's a snapshot from my light + H₂O-lab video session in the beginning of march 2011. Even though it's not so long ago, it actually feels like ages. There has been a lot of water under the table since, so to say.

Those dark winter days and nights in and around the workshop/mock-up space at the school was sure challenging, demanding both discipline and play, physical strenght and mental clairvoyance. Looking back on it now, I think that's where the foundation of my diploma project was solidified, and it sure was a substantial platform of raw concrete to both build upon, but also an anchor to hold on to while going through storms.

However, right now the same very models are actually back in the mock-up space, after a few months of drifting around in the schoool, waiting to be exhibited in the exhibition space nearby in a few days.

I'm looking forward to catch up with you people at the SPS soon again. I DO want to sit around a table with you before the world goes bananas.

The Nuclear Forest Recovery Zone

While researching on the use of fungus for bioremediation, as an energy source or in food production, I came across a TED-talk by Paul Stamet. In the talk he explains how we as humans/a society is connected to fungi, and how we can benefit from the intelligence of the fungi to extend the lifetime of our civilization. The talk is blanancing on the creative boarderline between gaia theory, empiric research and rocket science.

An up-to-date example of this is his proposal for The Nuclear Forest Recovery Zone - Myco-remediation of the Japanese Landscape After Radioactive Fallout:

"The enormity and unprecedented nature of this combined natural and human-made disaster (bolded by SPS-editor) will require a massive and completely novel approach to management and remediation. And with this comes a never before seen opportunity for collaboration, research and wisdom.

The nuclear fallout will make continued human habitation in close proximity to the reactors untenable. The earthquake and tsunami created enormous debris fields near the nuclear reactors. Since much of this debris is wood, and many fungi useful in mycoremediation are wood decomposers and build the foundation of forest ecosystems, I have the following suggestions:

1) Evacuate the region around the reactors.

2) Establish a high-level, diversified remediation team including foresters, mycologists, nuclear and radiation experts, government officials, and citizens.

3) Establish a fenced off Nuclear Forest Recovery Zone.

4) Chip the wood debris from the destroyed buildings and trees and spread throughout areas suffering from high levels of radioactive contamination.

5) Mulch the landscape with the chipped wood debris to a minimum depth of 12-24 inches.

6) Plant native deciduous and conifer trees, along with hyper-accumulating mycorrhizal´mushrooms, particularly Gomphidius glutinosus, Craterellus tubaeformis, and Laccaria amethystina (all native to pines). G. glutinosus has been reported to absorb – via the mycelium – and concentrate radioactive Cesium 137 more than 10,000-fold over ambient background levels. Many other mycorrhizal mushroom species also hyper-accumulate.

7) Wait until mushrooms form and then harvest them under Radioactive HAZMAT protocols.

8) Continuously remove the mushrooms, which have now concentrated the
radioactivity, particularly Cesium 137, to an incinerator. Burning the mushroom will result in radioactive ash. This ash can be further refined and the resulting concentrates vitrified (placed into glass) or stored using other state-of-the-art storage technologies."

However, Tom Volk didn't let the Fungus of the Month for May 1997 slip away. In February 2007 it was back! During the almost ten year out of the spotlight it is easy to think that nothing has happened, but with fungus, the absent of light is the condtion for everything to happen. During the decade passed Volk and his crew demonstrated that Phanerochaete chrysosporium has the ability degrade phenolic resin, a previously non-biodegradable industrial polymer. Phenolic resin is a plastic like material, which is produced in quanities over 2 million tons yearly. That confirms - one time for all - that this white-rot fungus is everything but a one hit wonder.

Dear People at South Pole Station.

Its been a long time since I have seen you woolen sweater dressed guys. This night I had a dream similar to the one from Fight Club where a tiny penguin appears with a soft voice and says "slide". In these days I am sliding to much north I believe.
I really miss the feeling of being in an international territory full of undistributed oil fields. I miss the landscape that has so often provided us with a feeling of infinity and love.

I brought my globe to Copenhagen and have decided to turn it up side down so that every time I look at it my dear South Pole looks right back at me and makes me feel as if I was feet up and head down.

Hope to see you soon, over, under and between the ice.

To whom it may concern,

I am currently involved in the development of a project for an art-festival-rave-exhibition planned for an undisclosed point of time this future. The working title is 12KUBE, and the skinny is basically a setup for 12 separate exhibition spaces for 12 invited artists, all housed in a large venue yet to be defined.

In this process I'm looking into developing a scheme that is universal, site-unspecific, and incorporate ideas from our collective interest in emergent behaviour, game theory and to some extent perhaps situationism applied in architecture. The overall aim is primarily to investigate a spatial organization detached from traditional functionalist paradigms, with aims to establish an architecture that is inhabited or occupied rather than executed as part of program, meaning an effort to fertilize natural bottom-up emergant behavioural patterns.

This is of course a paradox, and this is where any discussion of such ideas begins. How to design a system of non-design? And isn't any large gathering of individuals inherently subject to emergent behaviour?

What follows is a series of initial sketches, outlining the basic premise.

What I find interesting in this approach is the potential of colliding organizational systems, the overall configuration of the space is generated by a simple set of rules. The collision as such comes into effect when human agents operate in the negative, left-over/in-between-space the first system dictates, and their own operational agendas as participants.

The interior of the cubes themselves will of course also play a large part, and attract or detract attention in relation with their content, and I assume various architectural or other attributes will become relevant, in particular use of light, sound, heat. I would propose to keep the main hall largely darkened, with potential to temporarily illuminate sections of the space to stage ephemeral, pop-up performance/eventspaces that in theory could occur at any place or at any time within the darkened space. These events could be utilized as catalysts to temporarily activate unpopular parts of the playing field effectively "breaking the fourth wall" by making the participants momentarily self-aware. To further underline the potentials of the concept, I would also propose eventual seating arrangements to be mobile, lightweight and singular, this importance made evident in this film (@20:20), which I also highly recommend watching in full.

There are different approaches to the kind of games Conway's "Game of Life" represents, if not only in terms of geometric similarities. A familiar example is the simple game of tic-tac-toe, as mentioned in the leda tutorial. Another example to some extent, the windows classic minesweeper. Another more prolific, the japanese game GO.

Below is a set of investigations I did during todays lecture on modern day virtue-ethics. Incidentally, the flipside provided me with the alternative tic-tac-toe approach, produced some months earlier at a similar event.

The rules I experimented with included the following: Each cube may create clusters, but no larger than three in size. Clusters may join orthogonally or diagonally, with a maximum length of two cubes orthogonally, and three diagonally. Spacing between clusters are related to their size, a cluster of two may not be in closer proximity to another cluster than two cubes, singles may be positioned within a single cube's distance. This complicated exercise in parametric design was performed using a supercomputer.

The alternative tic-tac-toe exercise followed standard championship rules. X vs O, five in a row wins and ends the game.

The manifest that was not

Some time ago AK suggested that I should write a Manifest of NO, in order to help me to control my time and energy; simply to learn to say no to things. It was a great idea, and just bringing the idea to the surface of my streams of thoughts has helped me with small and bigger choices.

However, I have decided not to write the manifest.

THE «YES» SESSION

Attended by three directors (Fritz Freleng, Bob McKimson and me), three writers (Warren Foster, Todd Pierce, and Mike), and the production chief (Johnny Burton), and – often, sadly – the producer. (The layout men did not ordinarily attend the jam session. It was felt best to bring them in on completion of the storyboard, coincidentally working with the director as he does the character layouts.)

This session was, I believe, an event unique to Warner Bros. Unique at that time, perhaps anytime. Because this was not a brainstorming session in the usual sense, it was a «yes» session, not an «anything goes» session. Anything went, but only if it was positive, supportive, and affirmative to the premise. No negatives were allowed. If you could not contribue, you kept quiet. For want of a better term, I have always called it THE «YES» SESSION. Again, the «yes» session is not a brainstorming session: repeat, it is not a session in which anything goes. The purpose is to advance an idea or ideas, not an emotional outburst for the emotional benefit of the participants or as a story man's confession of a buried affair with a girl's track shoe. The «yes» session only has one objective: to write a story.

The «yes» session imposes only one dicipline: the abolition of the word «no». Anyone can say «no». It is the first word a child learns and often the first word he speaks. It is a cheap word because it requires no explanation, and many men and women have acquired a reputation for intelligence who know only this word and have used it in place of thought on every occasion. The «yes» session lasts only for two hours, but a person who can only say «no» finds it an eternity. Negative-minded people have been known to finally inflate and burst with accumulated negatives and say something positive, because it is also true that a person who here-to-fore can only say «no» is also a person who must say something.

A «no» is defined as any negative: «I don't like it.» «There must be a better way.» «I don't like to criticise, but ... » «I've heard that one before.» «I don't know.» Or: «Oh, for Christ's sake, Chuck.» All are roadblocks impending the advancement and exploration of the value of an idea and are forbidden.

Of course, all story ideas are not good or useful, and if you find you cannot contribute, then silence is proper, but it is surprising how meaty and muscular a little old stringy «yes» (which is another name for a premise) can become in as little as fifteen or twenty minutes, when everyone present unreservedly commits his immedate impulse and positive response to it.

UNIREALM:sync

On a gloomy morning in East London I discovered an alignment between the pavement and a commercial for local initiatives in sports. That day I just noticed the concurrence of two similar patterns. Looking at old files on my telephone i revisited this little film.

I tend to see the alignment as a kind of city-commerce-sync. A weird little trace of to completely random systems overlaying and interfering with each other.
But why does this little film become interesting now more than a year after it was shot?

Visiting the blog I am not a gun I became aware of a pretty interesting theme. In the blogpost 'New york' the writer elaborate a little on how the city becomes more and more predictable as you get to know it and how to find your way around. Referring to Speed Levitch he tends to see the grid as the ultimate example of the 'death of magic'.
Well for me the interesting thing in this case was not the situationist learning by drifting approach, nor the death of magic, but the fact that he refers to a phenomenon; 'Manhattan-henge' as the only good thing about the grid plan.

2 days a year (May 28 and July 12 or July 13) the sunset aligns with the east-west streets on Manhattan and you will see the setting sun exactly at the end of the street, being a 'romantic' epiphenomenon to the ultimate example of death of magic, creating a cross measuring of time. This is the SYNC. The sync between two UNIREALMS - the man made Manhattan grid and the and the almost unexplainable universe that surrounds us.

Strangely enough Manhattan-henge is completely predictable and is at the same time a bonus for those who are aware of the phenomena. The ultimate example of 'chance of drifting'.

Staying a little in the present before heading back some hundred years, one could suggest that these phenomenons are note rare, but will occur at a infinite speed and in a infinite number - always and all the time. Since there is no exact definition of UNIREALM:sync its hard to exclude anything.
What definitely makes Manhattan Henge count as a UNIREALM:sync, is the fact that it is heavily mapped through the web. Go for a Flickr search: manhattan+"may 28" - (another bunch of kool photos can be seen here) and you will realize that the sync infiltrates the virtual world as well.

Though the phenomena has been around since the mid 1800, it wasn't coined until Neil deGrasse Tyson in 2002 named it Manhattan-henge, referring to the British Stonehenge (3500 bc) at which there at different periods has been various adjustments in the alignments to northern and southern solstice.

The precision in some ancient architecture and its relative strong relation to astronomy can be recognized in the Giza pyramid, that is said to be facing north-south-east-west with a divergence of less than a fraction of a degree. This is a sync is hard to capture since it doesn't throw off any tangible effect.

Another even more interesting example is the smaller Mayan temple Chichen Itza. Here they managed to introduce a pretty developed symbolism into the pyramid-sun-sunc.
At spring and fall equinox (sunrise), the 9 steps of the pyramid casts a shadow that creates a serpent (Kukulkan) on the side of the 365 step stairs. At this biannual event, the shadow fits perfectly with the serpents head which is constantly waiting for the serpent to arrive from heaven. (To go into Mayan culture is far to complicated, but as a little sip of it I found this quite elaborate site Beyond 2012 - that also contains a countdown for the last day. As a cheer up after this reading check NASA FAQ about the 2012 issue.)

Holy Wols - Porch Tour!

Holy Wols is David Feil and Amye McCarther, a Houston based Americana Duo that recently did a porch tour that caught my attention. I decided to do a small interview with Amye McCarther, not so much about the actual music, rather about the tour itself.

JI: Tell us a little bit about the porch tour, to start with, how did you come up with the idea?

AM: The idea came about organically. I think we were playing on our friend Zach's big porch over in Harrisburg and trying to plot a tour for the summer. The fact that we'd rather be playing on porches for our friends and neighbors than in venues for audiences occurred to us kind of simultaneously, I think. It made perfect sense because much of our music has actually emerged from lazy afternoons fiddling around on the stoop at David's or on the shady balcony at my house. So we started hitting people up for porches to play on, promising to croon and swoon and stomp our feet if they obliged.

This triggers my fascination for logistics! How was the tour organized?

Haphazardly. At first we were thinking that our porch tour would span our three favorite neighborhoods in Houston: Harrisburg, the Montrose, and the Heights. We secured a day to play at our friends' bookstore in the Heights on a Saturday evening. It has a quiet little back porch and we thought it would make a nice close to the day. Somehow neighborhood gossip and drunk talk carried fast and we had people asking if we would play on their porches - all of whom were in the Heights as well. So we narrowed our territory and planned a route for the afternoon of five porches from the northwest corner to the southeast.

What is the Heights like? And is there a 'scene' that you are a part of in Houston?

The Heights also has the tag "Historic Heights" and "The Small Town Near Downtown". It flanks downtown Houston and Buffalo Bayou to the northwest. Being an older neighborhood it sports two of my favorite things: huge old trees and grand verandas. The houses were built before the advent of air conditioning and in their day the verandas provided a shady breezy retreat from the stifling boggy heat which engulfs the city for about six months out of the year. Unfortunately, Houston's relaxed zoning and a recent trend of gentrification in the Heights has allowed many of these elegant older homes to be supplanted by newer, more chic looking structures sans verandas. Nevertheless, the Heights is the best remaining neighborhood for porches in the Houston area.

Despite the recent changes, the Heights still feels homey and cozy. It's become the place where young people go to try on domesticity for the first time, buy their first house, walk their dogs. And, like just about everywhere else in Houston, the warmth and damp make everything seem drowsy, the pace of life feels slow.

No, there isn't a scene that I'm part of in Houston. Or, rather, I'm part of many scene fragments. Chalk it up to sprawl, one of the fastest growing populations in the US, the dying off of independent music venues, etc. It really feels like you're operating in a vacuum here. Most musicians and artists eventually leave for that reason.

Were all gigs (is that word still used by the way?) the same day? Did you carry instruments with you? Was it just you and David that was biking between the porches or did parts of the audience follow you?

Yes, the gigs were all in one day.

As it happened we had a surprise guest that day, our friend Frank Davis. Frank is a sort of venerable, fun-loving folk/blues singer who has been performing in Houston since the 1950's. We went by Frank's on our way to the first porch and he asked if he could bring along his Daddy Banjo. We were delighted.

It was mostly the audience on bikes. David and Frank shuttled the instruments in the car. I rode on the back of my friend's bike. As we went from porch to porch more people came along, kids came out on their scooters, neighbors drifted over from other porches.

Our hosts were awesome. Everywhere we played they had barbeque, gin fizzes, lavender lemonade, and lemon bars. As the afternoon progressed everyone gradually got a little more boozy, the foot-stomping and whistling got a little boisterous. Good times.

Was it unplugged? Did you play the same set on all porches?

Yep, we played unplugged. David, Frank and I played on the porches and everyone else spread blankets under the trees in the yard to listen. We had already planned to play five different sets without repeating any songs. With Frank thrown into the mix it turned into a song swap. We sang on his songs, he sang on ours, someone would play solo while the others took a break for drinks and snacks. It was very relaxed.

Did the porches and the settings of the tour in general influence the performances? If yes, in which ways?

I think the music itself was, from its conception, influenced by porches. Also, I like things that have a conciseness or containedness about them and I think the porch tour achieved that. We wrote our lazy ballads on our own porches and then performed in the same fashion. The Southern hospitality, the temperate weather and good company knit together to create a sort of utopian atmosphere which we couldn't have made elsewhere. So, yes, I think porches were integral to the experience.

Zec Safet - fascination of the dust

Zec Safet draws his drawings as fractals of doodles. Everything repeating itself as you zoom in, and always becoming smaller and smaller in the repetition. He expresses the trees in this dusty way, almost as smoke from a fire, or as a gray explosion of blossom.
His drawings is both sad and lively at the same time. An intriguing dilemma embedded in the piece. His paintings reminds me of my own fascination of dust, its rhizome nature and open ended becoming. Go see him if you get the chance.

I was just stroke by a feeling that the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai is more a monument of our time, than speculations of future scenarios.

Looking back at the history of World Expo's, I have a feeling that the future as something exiting, something approaching and something desirable.

Now in the year 2010, we are living the future, over 50% of the world's population live in urban areas, blah, blah, blah. City bikes, blah, blah and blah. We know.

Idag er sket noget märkeligt og også helt fantastiskt. Jeg kom i snak med en dame, som väret i Gordon Matta Clark's vennekreds. Da hon sa noget i stil med at "dessvärre er det jo ikke nogle af hans verker der er bevarede" var det noget der gik op för mig. Det har jo, om en i et meget begrenset tidsrum, väret muligt at opleve hans verker. Da jeg har oplevet de kun gennem böger og andre representationsformer, har jeg opfattet det jeg oplevede derigennem som verket, og ikke som nogen representation.

Jeg kan märke hvordan verden ekspanderer i mit sind.

Assume that this ash/dust cloud will be around for a weeks, months, or even years. How will that effect our (everyday) life? Will we still take that ~~cheap flight~~ trip to London? Could this ephemeral apocalypse speed up the development of high-speed rails in Europe?

In the common discourse on and around SPS, reading Steven Johnsson and Manuel De Landa, the idea of the city as an ecosystem where the city is the result of the emergent intelligence of its agents has been discussed. Taking that idea to a bigger scale, we might consider the Gaia hypothesis, where the world is considered a "a complex interacting system that maintains the climatic and biogeochemical conditions on Earth". The idea of the world as a selfregulating system has been on my mind since last night, when a friend talked about how old nordic mytholody explained the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull as nature selfregulating the effects of cheap airlines.

There is something interesting in the Gaia Hypothesis in relation to Steven Johnsson's Emergence, since the theories of emergent behaviour both deconstruct and reinforce the idea of Mother Earth. Taking the magic away but at the same time explaining the script.

I am not sure where this post is leading, but there is something in the air.

So, all of a sudden one of SPS's ongoing researchs, The Aesthetics of Dust, is linked to the agenda of the day. As all airports in northen Europe are being shut down, The Aesthetics of Dust announces its presence and it is overwhelming.

I stumbled upon this picture (below) from 9/11, which clearly reveals the dimension of fear, rage and violence connected to dust clowds. At the same time, this picture clearly manifestate the spatial potential of the dust. Maybe it is time to reverse this idea of the dust clowd as something frightening and threatful.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think it is time to construct and inhabit the friendly dust cloud. And with those words, this blogpost is passed on to Bas Jan Ader's Tea Party (1972):

Thorvaldsens Efterklang

The album cover for the new Efterklang Album, Magic Chairs, is a poetic music shot and brilliant architecture photo at the same time. The way it uses M. G. B. Bindesbølls Thorvaldsens Museum as the settings for a "ephemeral fairytale" happening on a rainy Copenhagen day is completely in the SPS spirit.
Buchards photo adds a new layer to the museum that is worth as much as any installation - a story you'll have in mind every time you visit the museum and look into the empty atrium.
On the back of the cover you will see all the multicolored pennants lying on the ground as a result of this sudden phenomena. In case you don't flip the LP you might believe that these light weight patterns will gone in a few seconds leaving no traces at all, but imprints the trajectories in your memory. What are the chances to ever experience this? Small i suppose, but as you examine the photo you'll see that this phenomena was exactly what the guys from Efterklang saw when they went to Thorvaldsens.

Inside was a scroll of paper, the manuscript of Captain Adam Queensdale, deted 23 October 1761.

Although it had been well protected, over one hundred and twenty-five years the bottle had been carried by the ocean currents, the paper had suffered a degree of damage. I spent several exciting evenings copying the contents of the original which threatened to dintegrate into dust and ashes at any moment. Studying this tale, which had a healing effect on my sould, I decided to save it from oblivion, but also from the curiosity of the masses, from the quasi-scholars and sensationalists. The only way to do that was to act just as the bottle had acted toward me: I hade to let the story find its readers by itself. I made six completely identical copies and inserted them into six expensice, but uninteresting, books. I sent the boks to the addresses of reputable secondhand bookstores in London, Istanbul, Heidelberg, Reykjavik, Cairo and Bombay. They will. I am certain of it, know how to reach their readers. Everyone who comes to believe in their contents will do the same thing I did: he will make six copies of the text and find a way to release them into the world.

It's a bit hard to control how the two upper joints are acting (in relation to each other), but this seems to be a way to maximize the movement and beeing in control of the joints.

DUST by Ujin Lee and Tom Edwards

Ujin Lee and Tom Edwards is currently working on this project called DUST. It says on the web site, that the project is in progress, why there is very little information to find about the thoughts behind the project.

As we are at South Pole Station exploring the 'aesthetics of dust' I find this project interesting as a kind of research. It seems that they are working with dust in a global sense, as it can occur everywhere - indoors awa outdoors.

The dust clouds created by Lee and Edwards contains traces of an explosion (horizontal lines), which leads me to the thought that they are 'created' as artifacts more than 'observed' as unexplainable natural phenomena. The aesthetics of theese explosions is powerful and agressive yet quiet as they lift them selves from the ground.

Will you ever be able to find a dust cloud like this without seeing to guys with a trigger and a camera?

I think it is important for the next takes on the 'aesthetics of dust' that we explore more closely the ephemeral qualities in the dust, and of cause, treat the dust as clouds instead of explosions.

Its kind of a cool gadget - and a step in the right direction.

"Dr. Eric Sanderson sees water flowing everywhere in town, much of it bubbling from underground ("which is how Spring Street got its name"). He's identifed more than 40 brooks and streams that traversed what was once a hilly, rocky island in the Algonquin tongue of its first human occupants, the Lenni Lenape, Manhattana referred to those now-vanished hills. When New York's 19th-century planners imposed a grid on everything north of Greenwich Village - the jumble of original streets to the south being impossible to unsnarl - they behaved as if topography were irrelevant. (...)

Later, new contours arose, this time routed through rectilinear forms and hard angles, much as the water that once scuplted the island's land was now forced underground through a lattice of pipes. Eric Sanderson's Mannahatta Project has plotted how closely the modern sewer system follows the old watercourses, although man-made sewer lines can't wick away runoff as efficiently as nature. In a city that buried its rivers, he observes, "rain still falls. It has to go somewhere."

Lets not deny this fact. Snow and our 19th-century urban fabric does not melt together well.

Last year in Oslo public cries has been put forth to dump excess snow into the ocean, possibly without concern for the logistically failed idea of dumptrucks filled with snow clogging up already soaked infrastructure. On the other side of the globe the Chinese are using traditional methods of firework deployment to eliminate snow before it reaches the ground.

With new urban development being planned in snow-filled urban regions the world over, I ponder this question; has anyone ever considered attacking the problem where the snow actually falls?

This constitutes new concepts of urban development. Imagine infrastructure intergrated into new urban development, using low or high-tech methods. Melting the snow instantly as it falls with an intergrated pavement heating system is a tempting solution, but no. It is stupid.

Consider this: In the developed urban fabric, intergrate cavities for snow processing. In this controlled environment, snow can be dealt with in a proper manner. Lets not forget that this very snow is now no-longer romantic white and light-reflecting, but turned brown with exhaust and other human residues, soaked by arrays of kidults' dirty wet sneakers and old ladies fighting for their very lives, dragged into local bar-cafés, bookstores and conventient-stores making urban life unbearable for more or less anyone who has any concept of "the good life" in the city.

Our lazy sundays ruined just by thinking of stepping out the doorway.

These horrors aside, let's not forget that snow is water and water is a resource not to be messed with. I leave it to the crowd to ponder what glorious potential an underground waterpool can be used for. First impulse: pumped in tubes throughout the 4-5-6 story housing unit, heating the now care-free inhabitants in winter-hiatus. Anyone want to go out for a nice cup of cocoa? Imma put on my nikes. Lets just do it. Winter boot sales plummet. Clubs are packed with chicks in high heels. International logistic services celebrate.

To sum up; what the hell are we waiting for?

Dear co-workers and readers,

A few days ago i re-read the text "Hamnstadens flöden" by Karl Palmås (swedish only), which once again caught my attention since it seems to combine my approaches to life in general with how I approach architecture and cities. Simply it's about flow and emergence, rather than the creation of static stuctures.

Even though things (buildings for example) seems static, they are always a part of a bigger flux, it's just a question of the (time) frame and focus. In addition to "Hamnstadens flöden", I read a talk, also by Karl Palmås, about an updated perception of Koyaanisqatsi, Godfrey Reggio's masterpiece from 1982. At first seen Palmås writes, Koyaanisqatsi was a critique of our way to civilize mother earth. However, seen today Koyaanisqatsi is much more of an understanding of how our civilization emerges.

After those readings, I decided to look closer on Palmås sources and references, and two names caught my attention: Manuel De Landa and Steven Berlin Johnson.

For those intersted, co-writers or readers, I have compiled a reading list, and you are welcome to join SPSRG #1 (South Pole Station Reading Group #1) by reading one or more of these books within the upcoming 6 months (or so).

Fugtigheden i plantens rodnet aflæses af en fugtighedscensor, der kontinuerligt sender et digitalt signal tilbage til den microcontroller (Arduino) der fungerer som en koordinerende del af planten.
Her efter sendes et signal videre til 4 servomotorer, som hver styrer en af plantens 'nye' fingre.

I det øjeblik fugtighedscensoren sender en værdi til centrolleren, som betyder et for lavt indhold af vand i plantens rod net, sendes et tilsvarende aktivt signal videre til servomotorerne og planten begynder at drikke.
Det er tanken at planten lever i skjul under en bro og kun kommer ned til vandoverfladen for at drikke.

Resultatet er en hybrid; en plante som lever i en beskyttende skal der gør den i stand til at klare sig selv og overleve uden menneskets hjælp i en menneskeskabt verden.

And then, explore the one million detours possible to communicate the ecxact same 'data' ideas presented in the dust-videos.
In other words; what happens if we see the 'detours' as a kind of encrytion, through which we modify the basic easthetic set of rules.

Here is a piece of paper dotted with various inks, and lead, describing some initial ideas for how this would come to be, photographed.

The Ideas sketched out so far summed up are:

During my last travels I've videorecorded the internal airport transit rides. All shots are through the sidewindows of the different shuttles/trains/trams/etc.

I'm interested in this nomansland that is designed with transit as the only purpose. Which views/sceneries are there? How do my senses react to this environment? Are these transits similar all over the world / is the design generic?

I have (as for now) four different shot and I'm a bit unsure of how to go on with the material. I tried to put the different shots after eachother but the clib simply becomes too long / i'm too restless to watch it all.

I've been thinking of putting each one of the movies on one projector, then to be screened from the middle of a room/space so you get one shot in each direction. Then somehow the sound should be edited as well.

Anyway, here comes the raw material and feel free to ping-pong!

well, the first intuitive answer must be yes. Could the grid then instead be placed directly on site, and not imposed afterward in illustrator? Painting on the street, on a wall, placing a constructed grid?

Today i went to Fuglsang Museum in the very south of DK to see an exhibition on the theme TREES. This photo is the reason I went there. The way the tree is orchestrated... is stunning and in a sense ephimeral.

Can "The Easthetics of Dust" be transformed from representation to tool? Can a mapping of the visual and physical densifications/sprawls be used as a tool in a design process? Can these spatial mappings/tools/design processes also involve time?

the Easthetics of Dust ligger i forlængelse af S.P.S' fascinationen af det kortyvarige og flygtige, og er dermed ikke fremmed for projekterne "Ephimeral Euphorium" og "Ephimeral Fairytalestructures or 2 days with a kite".
Det er en art afsøgning af forsvindingen som æstetisk mål - eller delokaliseringen af et stof.
Støv har en tendens til kun at være begribelige for vores sanser hvis det findes i tilstrækkeligt store koncentrationer og mængder, og det er helt oplagt at billederne netop afsøger den arkitektur støven skaber i det tidsrum hvor den undslipper vores sanser.

Jeg lavede engang en optagelsesprøve til EASA07, hvori jeg diskuterede 'gadens spor'. Opgaven hed "Hændelser og Spor".
Jeg fandt spor, og eftersøgte de hændelser jeg mente kunne have ledt til sporet.

Jeg brygger på en opfølger til 'Hændelser og Spor', ved navn 'Disappearing/Disappearence', som handler om hvad der sker når hændelser ikke efterlader spor. Samtidig regner jeg med at 'Disappearing/Disappearence' må blive en diskussion af hvornår noget er blevet så meget noget andet, at det kan kategoriseres som værende væk.

Jeg glæder mig til at kunne præsentere en lidt klarere ide.

Sardinien - sjæl og samarkant

Jeg boede 7 måneder på Sardinien i 2005, og siden har jeg været tiltrukket. Jeg har besøgt Sardinien 2 gange siden jeg vendte hjem og i aften drager jeg afsted på min 4. tur til Dorgali, Cala Gonone, Golfo Orosei og hvad de lune steder ellers hedder. Hver gang viser nye sider af øen sig og hver gang fornemmer jeg hvordan jeg kan bruge rejsen ret forskelligt. Sidste år klappede alting, og jeg kom hjem med en renset sjæl. Det er godt for sjælen at være på Sardinien.

I år håber jeg på at kunne gøre sidste års kunststykke efter. Forhåbentlig får jeg og min følgesvend Hr. Eggert Pedersen nogle gode dage på vandet. Ikke sikkert at vi kommer tættere på vores drøm om at ro hele vejen rundt. Givetvis kommer vi til at ro en strækning som allerede er tilbagelagt et par gange. Så formentlig er det gensynsglæden der er i højsædet. Gensynsglæde kan være godt for sjælen, men kan også bære nostalgien i sig.

Pionerturen rummer ren sjælerenselse.

Det er en underdrivelse at sige at jeg er spændt på turen. Jeg har ikke ladet op på nogen usædvanelig vis, men blot lade dagen for afrejsen oprende. Denne mangel på mental forberedelse gør det endnu stærkere og lykkeligt at finde pas og pandelygte frem på selve dagen for afrejse.

Jeg skriver dette lille indlæg som plaster på min rastløshed og som en apetitvækker for den foto/lyd-montage jeg planlægger at ligge op på bloggen når jeg vender hjem.
